Project Objectives:
What do we aim to achieve with this project?
As the Manisa Provincial Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), our project, Empowering Women in the Cases of Both Natural and Human-Made Disasters, in collaboration with our partners from Portugal, Italy, and Greece, aims to:
- Empower 3,750 young women by enhancing their awareness and preparedness for disaster risks.
- Equip them with knowledge about disaster management and response through four transnational activities.
Implementation:
What activities will we implement?
- International Preparation / Opening Meeting: Material preparation and coordination activities.
- International Disaster Awareness Train-the-Trainer Activity: Empowerment and awareness training for trainers.
- International Drill and Evacuation Training / Sharing Best Practices: Practical training in disaster drills and evacuation protocols.
- International Final Activity: Wrap-up and presentation of the project outcomes.
Expected Results:
What do we expect to achieve?
In many regions under disaster risk, sustainable practices are not fully established. Our goal is to develop a proactive, participatory, and gender-sensitive disaster management system that assesses women’s capacities and addresses sociocultural restrictions that increase their vulnerability during disasters.
Through four transnational activities over 18 months, we aim to raise the disaster awareness of 3,750 young women, helping to reduce disaster risks and increase resilience.
Target Groups:
-
Initial Beneficiaries: 16 participants from the partner organizations will directly benefit from the project.
-
Turkey (Manisa): During the 18-month project, 3,000 women from the following organizations and institutions will receive training from Manisa AFAD:
- 29 October Women’s Association
- 8 March Women’s Solidarity Association
- Soma Women’s Solidarity Association
- Turkish Women’s Union
- Turkish Red Crescent Manisa Branch Women’s Committee
- Manisa Provincial Directorate of National Education
- Public Education Centers in 10 disaster-prone districts in Manisa province
-
Partner Countries: A total of 750 women (250 per country) in Greece, Italy, and Portugal will receive training, along with their families and close circles.
-
Stakeholder Organizations: AFAD Provincial Directorate staff, AFAD young women volunteers, and young women from our stakeholder NGOs, including MAT, AKUT, and ANDA.
-
Indirect Beneficiaries: Families and close circles of the 16 project participants will be indirectly affected by the project activities.
Project Outputs:
- Multilingual Project Website: Integrated courses on Disaster Awareness, Humanitarian Aid and Psychosocial Support, and Fire Awareness.
- Project Information Brochure: General information about the project and its goals.
- Brochure on Disasters and Emergencies: Educational material about disaster preparedness and response.
Outcomes:
- In disaster-prone regions, practices that enhance preparedness often lack sustainability. This project will establish a more proactive, participatory, and gender-sensitive disaster management approach that evaluates women’s capacities.
- Sociocultural constraints limiting women’s freedom of movement and employment increase their vulnerability during disasters. Through four transnational activities, we aim to improve the disaster-related knowledge of 3,750 women aged 18-30, empowering them to reduce their risks and vulnerabilities.
