Third Transnational Meeting of the Project – Crotone, Italy
The third transnational meeting was held from November 4 to November 9, 2024, in the Calabria region of Italy. In many countries worldwide, women face challenges in evacuation during disasters. The reason behind this is that early warning systems and evacuation plans are not easily understandable or adopted.
Women who are alone at home during disasters may struggle with evacuation because they are unaware of escape routes. As a result, women are more likely to lose their lives in such situations. A drill that included both tabletop and field exercises was conducted, with earthquakes chosen as the specific hazard type relevant to Italy’s disaster-prone nature. The exercise included correct behavioral practices during a disaster, and one evacuation drill was held.
In this scenario, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake lasting 12 seconds was simulated in the city of Crotone, Italy. Responsibilities were assigned to school administration, teachers, first aid and emergency teams, and floor supervisors. During the earthquake, the “drop, cover, and hold” method was applied, and after the earthquake ended, the evacuation commenced. Students were directed in an orderly and safe manner to the nearest emergency exits and evacuated to the schoolyard. At the gathering area, students formed a circle by holding hands; teachers took attendance, and after checking the classrooms and ensuring all students were safe, the drill ended, followed by an evaluation.
As the second part of the activity, each partner presented two projects recognized as “Good Practice Examples” by the national agencies of their respective countries from the 2014-2020 Erasmus+ Program period, with a priority on projects from their own country.
