Disaster Awareness Train-the-Trainer Activity, Kozani /Greece

The purpose of this activity was to provide Disaster Awareness Training to a total of 36 participants, comprising employees from NGOs and Women’s Associations in the host country and partner organizations. The event was organized by our Greek partner, European Initiative for Youth Empowerment, Mindfulness, and Wellbeing “GO Alive”, and took place in Kozani, Greece, from June 12 to June 17, 2024. Prior to the meeting in Greece, a virtual meeting was held to finalize the preparations, with all participants attending online.

Promoting disaster risk management is essential for building disaster-resilient communities. Existing social vulnerabilities within communities complicate disaster response efforts and make recovery more challenging. The socio-cultural roles and responsibilities assigned to individuals, especially women and men, further increase these vulnerabilities, making disaster risks harder to manage. There is a common perception that women are among the most vulnerable groups in disasters. Therefore, it is crucial for women, given their social roles, to participate in local disaster management processes, as their involvement is vital for disaster preparedness.

As part of Activity 2, our organization will conduct three training sessions on Psychosocial Support and Humanitarian Aid and Fire Safety to help achieve the project’s goals. The partners, who will gain competencies in Disaster Awareness Training through this activity, will disseminate the training in their respective local communities. This will contribute to achieving the project’s objectives and help ensure the dissemination of the project’s outcomes.

By ensuring that the results of these activities are shared by all partners and maintaining the sustainability of these efforts after the project concludes, our target groups — especially young women — will no longer be seen as helpless, vulnerable, or victims. Instead, they will be empowered individuals capable of coping with disasters by utilizing their skills and strengths.
